This Week in the News
10/5/15 - 10/9/15CSU MONTEREY BAY TOUR
What a beautiful day at Cal State University, Monterey Bay. Students, teachers and parents participated in a tour that took them around the campus (2.5 miles!) and into the Visual Arts and Technology building, the Business and Technology building, the Cinematic and Theater building, the Library and Technology building and into the student Residence Halls. Our students also ate like a college student, eating at the Student Center. All the students had great questions, discovered that the college has over 125 clubs, and is a division 2 school, featuring thirteen men's and women's intercollegiate sports including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, baseball, softball, women's volleyball, women's track and women's water polo. Students also found interesting facts about the old Fort Ord Army Base.

Toyota's Drive for Schools fundraiser is here. Charter teachers will be handing out books for students to sell. Schools keep 100% of the proceeds, which means for our Charter, each Program keeps 100% of the proceeds from sales.
Students learned how to make steer manure tea.
The nutrients found in manure tea make it an ideal fertilizer for garden plants. The nutrients from manure dissolves easily in water where it can be added to a sprayer or watering can. The leftover manure can be thrown in the garden or reused in the compost pile.
For Coast Redwood, that means this fundraiser will allow for our students to raise monies for 2016 Grad Night tickets, 2016 graduation cap and gown, the EHS class, our general CRHS academic fund (field trips resources) Artemis, and/or for their 2017 spring trip to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon.
Please make payments in cash or check made out to CRHS. Our deadline is Wednesday, October 14th.
Return ticket stubs to your teachers in an envelope noting your name, and where to hold your funds.
Drive For Schools, founded in 2005 by Subaru of Santa Cruz and now sponsored by the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Capitola Auto Mall Dealer Group, successfully raised over $567,000 in 2014 for local schools and more than $3.4 million total since 2005. Last year 81 schools participated and Soquel High School raised just over $40,000 all by themselves. Schools sell the $5 tickets and keeps every single penny it raises.
This year the Grand Prize winner will have their choice of a brand new Toyota Prius or Subaru Outback including tax, title, and license. And, if the winner isn’t in the market for a new car, we’ll award them $25,000 in cash instead! And we will also be giving away ten $1,000 cash prizes, plus over 100 additional prizes.
College, Career, Technical Education Section
College and Career Exploration:
This is a great year for your student(s) to get serious about colleges and careers that might be good fits for them down the road. Family vacations should include college visits if possible. College campuses are some of the most beautiful places to visit and the evidence clearly supports that students who visit college campuses are much more likely to attend. Another way to get information about colleges is to attend College and Career Night at Cabrillo on November 2nd where over 50 college admission counselors will have informational booths set up and Cabrillo will also showcase many of their own career prep programs such as culinary, law enforcement and fire training. This is one stop shopping at its best. We encourage you and your student to attend. Attached is a flier for your information.
FINANCIAL NIGHT - October 15, 2015 - PAC
College costs have been going through the roof - UC’s now cost $30,000+ per year. If you are concerned about college costs, SLV High will be hosting Steve Shapiro’s “How Will You Pay for College” presentation. Steve is a CPA and a Certified Financial Planner. He speaks to parents at many high schools each year.
COLLEGE APPLICATION DATES
CSUs: Application submission starts on October 1st.
UCs: The online application has been published - so go ahead and have a look, and note the personal statement prompts are different from the Common Application essay prompts. Submission goes from October 1st to November 30th
SAT & ACT UPDATES
The old SAT will be offered until January 2016. From March 2016, the new test will be offered. The difference between the two? The vocabulary section will be gone, there will be a calculator-free math section, the essay portion will be beefed up, and there will be no penalty (as there is now) for wrong answers on the multiple choice.
Some students, however, may find that the old test is easier for their work style - so get them to take the free on-line practice test offered by College Board. click here SAT PRACTICE-COLLEGE BOARD
If this works for your student please register them in a SAT test - the next one on October 3rd, (but we are now in the late registration period). Annabel Rordan, counselor at SLV HIgh School, will run preparation classes in the fall for the old SAT and for the new SAT in the spring.
SAT Workshop - Saturday, 9/26, 9am-4pm in the SLV High School MPR
ACT Workshop - Saturday, 10/10, 9am-4pm in the SLV High School MPR
Our students will all also do the PSAT this year - at SLV High School - this is important to give it your best as a good performance opens up pathway towards the National Merit Scholarships. The test costs about $25. Dates will be published as I get them. Usually mid-October.
The ACT test is unchanged and Annabel Rordan will also run a preparation class. Some students do better in this test, so check out the ACT test preparation site: click here ACT PRACTICE TEST
Taking the SAT Practice Test is a stress-free (and free) way to find your strengths and weaknesses on the SAT. You can test online, or you can print it out.

Community Colleges such as Cabrillo College, do not require the SAT/ACT, however admissions does require course placement tests in English and in Math. For additional information, please refer to our links/tabs noted above under GUIDANCE and ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS TO COLLEGE
The SAT and other College Board tests are offered several times a year. Most students take the SAT for the first time during the spring of their junior year and a second time during the fall of their senior year.
